P21 Gallery's 2024.04.28~06.08 'Exoskeleton' Exhibition

[By E-Daily Reporter Lee Yoon-jung] Upon entering the exhibition hall, a large anatomical diagram catches the eye. It appears to be a diagram explaining the internal structure of the human body, but upon closer inspection, it contains the story of a person. This is Ahn Min-jeong's artwork "Self-Portrait" (2007). It depicts scars left on the abdomen, marks from bee stings on the thighs during childhood, and even indicates underwear size along with explanations. At the entrance of the exhibition hall, there is also a 2024 version of "Self-Portrait". It reflects the changes in her body after giving birth to two children. Humorous elements such as breastfeeding, the image of the baby inside the belly lying upside down, and stories told to her husband who became her right arm after childbirth are depicted. Ahn explained, "This piece is a work made by imagining what I would look like if I were to redraw myself and transfer it into a diagram. I tried to convey my own story that cannot be seen through diagram symbols."

A P21 Gallery official stated, "We tend to focus more on the external aspects of the body, thus perceiving the internal world as ambiguous and mysterious." They explained the intention behind the exhibition, saying, "Through anatomy reborn through art, we hope to provide a time to reconsider our internal psyche and societal perceptions."

[이데일리 이윤정 기자] 전시장에 들어서면 커다란 해부학 도면이 시선을 사로잡는다. 인체의 내부 구조를 설명한 해부도면 같지만, 자세히 들여다보면 한 사람의 인생이 담겨 있다. 바로 안민정(43) 작가의 ‘자화상’(2007)이다. 배에 남은 흉터라든지, 어린 시절 허벅지에 말벌에 쏘인 자국, 속옷 사이즈까지 설명과 함께 표시해 놓았다. 전시장 입구에는 2024년 버전의 ‘자화상’도 있다. 아이 둘을 출산한 후의 몸이라 이전과는 다소 달라졌다. 모유수유, 거꾸로 누워있는 배 속 아이의 모습, 출산 후 오른팔이 된 남편에게 하는 이야기 등이 유머러스하게 담겼다. 안 작가는 “나를 재도해서 도면으로 옮긴다면 어떤 모습일지 상상하면서 만든 작품”이라며 “도면 기호로 보이지 않는 나만의 이야기를 전하려 했다”고 설명했다.

P21갤러리 관계자는 “우리는 신체의 외부적인 것에 더 집중하기 때문에 몸 내부의 세계를 모호하고 신비로운 부분으로 인식한다”며 “예술로 재탄생한 해부학을 통해 우리의 내부 심리와 사회적 인식에 대해 다시 한번 생각해 보는 시간이 되기를 바란다”고 기획의도를 설명했다.
