Artist Minjeong An expresses the vitality and significance of the invisible, by borrowing the most persuasive proof method of science and mathema-tics in her work. Using a new technique grafting math and find arts, the young artist suggests a new form of art.

What triggered you to work on formulating stories of everyday life into math?
About eight years ago, an idea crossed my mind. 'What if I draw myself on a floor plan as if I were measuring myself with a ruler?"So I started drawing self-portraits with symbols that were found in mathematical, scientific or architectural drawings. With those schematized symbols, I was able to express not just the appearance but also the invisible things. That was the initial cause for me to carry on with my work of formulating stories in everyday life through symbols.

Your works deal with very personal subject matters and yet seem to have many elements that let viewers empathize with the works. How do you choose the subject matters in your daily life?
My works may seem modest and ordinary to others, but they are very special and dear to me. So I guess the things that I personally cherish or things that I'm interested in naturally manifest themselves in my works. Often handling memories with family or lovers, you seem to have a family-centered and relationship-oriented image that is distinguished from the common perception of a so- litary artist isolated from the rest of the society. What I like and what I am interested in lead to my works. I think this may be true for any artist as well. I am interested in things that revolve around me and relationships with people who I see often. These are essentially the things that compose my work.

How did your image of 'bag with science' come into existence?
While preparing for the Bagstage exhibition, I came to realization that bags share a lot in common with human. Anatomical Chart of Bag is the starting point of this exhibition. It was to overlap their similarity via anatomy, in that the function of bag is analogous to human body. For instance, the bag strap that connects human and bag resembles human arm, which serves to connect different people. The opening of bag is similar to human mouth in the same way zipper is to teeth. Wheels of carrier invented for the convenience of transfer function as human legs do. Not just that, but I thought that the act of putting belongings in bag is similar to the act of humans holding in their thoughts and feelings. Hence the work proceeded as I matched the images of bag and man.

What is the message you wish to convey in this exhibi- tion, "Bag is Science: Bag Equaton"?
"Bag=Human" would be the message. In mathematics, "=" means equal. As simple as it is, I believe that bag is a very personal object that 'holds in' an individual's stories and memories. Or it can 'resemble' his or her preferences and style. In other words, bags are more than mere tools that people use to simply put things in and carry around. It is just like people become bags and bags become people in the end.

How do you formulate the memories that are entangled with bags?
Memories are invisible and it's impossible to measure them. Containing Each Other, one of the works displayed in this exhibition, tells a story between a man and a woman regarding bags. The story is expressed through the difference in the weight of the bag before and after the date. The man's bag is filled with walnut pies, toasts he's supposed to eat next morning, an?d facial cleansers for men, which man alone can rarely choose and buy. All of these that his girlfriend packed up for him with great care add on to the weight of the bag. Here, you notice that it is not only the physical weight but also the figurative weight of a sense of security and stability that increased. The text book for his major and guidance to investment that he previously had in his bag contain burden for the future along with his love and devotion to his girlfriend. The woman's bag became subtly heavier because of tickets for the movie she watched today, coupon for a restaurant and the ink on the stamped coupon for the cafe?. There lie numerous stories and feelings. For instance, even though she will probably throw them away a few days later, she decides keep the movie tickets in her bag for now. That is because the movie tickets her boyfriend prepared to surprise her contain his love. The ink on the stamp for the cafe? coupon has exciting expectations for a free cup of coffee she will have next time along with her boyfriend's nagging on insisting her to reduce shopping instead of collecting those frivolous things. The coupon for the newly found restaurant flutters with plans for her next visit. As I explained earlier, the process of formulating stories within bags is to create a new formula, not merely with posses- sions put inside them, but rather with following stories as hints to support it.

What would you like to hold in your bag?
I wish there were only necessary stuff in my bag. I don't like heavy things and I get especially annoyed when I find an umbrella in my bag when it doesn't rain. But I'm not like that all the time. One time I went to beach and came back home with my bag full of shells. I knew that it would be a burden but I still gathered them and filled my bag with them. Thinking about that, I suppose I don't only put light and practical things in my bag. It will be wonderful for my bag to be always filled with really necessary things as well as things that can remind me of beautiful memories of the day.

Could you share with us a personal episode related to bags?

A long time ago while I was still preparing for the university admission, I got on the subway with a drawing in my bag. I put it on the shelf, forgot about it and got off the subway. I couldn't find the bag. Since then I don't put bags on the shelf in the subway. I worried that I might make the same mistake again, so I invented a way not to forget. If I have to put my bag on the shelf, I tie a string to it and wind the string on my wrist so that I don't forget about it. That way I never leave behind my bag on the subway.

What is the meaning of bag to you?
Preparing for this exhibition made me realize that bags have more meanings than what we casually think. I came to think of them as essential entities that hold me in, always close to me like part of my body. We are curious about your upcoming plan for next projects. From late April, I will be participating in a residency program. I plan to carry on with my works on details of everyday life there as well. If I were to wish for anything, I would wish that my works would be a gate for more people to cherish their own peculiar stories that are open to each and every individual.

In this exhibition, Minjeong An surpasses the idea that bags play a basic function of holding the possessions inside. She extends the idea in her work under the pre- mise that bags can even "contain abstract notions such as personal preferences, stories and dear memories." For instance, her work Containing Each Other functions as a medium that holds in parting lovers' respective memories on the fork of their split. It formulates the couple's weight of bags before and after the date. Here, bags are not only mere physical substances that possess things but they are also indications of individuals that hold in the phenomenon with all their five senses.

The man's bag has become heavier after the date. It's filled with a toast he's about to eat in the morning, two pieces of walnut pies he'll share with his brother, and a foam cleanser for men that he wouldn't even get a grasp of if not someone else had given him, all of which his girlfriend got for him. This contributed to the weight gain of security and stability. Yet the textbook for introduction to investment and his major made his bag even heavier with all the burden and responsibility for the future as well. Today he took snapshots of her image with his own eyes and kept it in his mind. On the other hand, the woman's small hand bag had a subtle increase in its weight after the date with a coupon for the new nice restaurant she found today, two movie tickets and newly added ink on her freshly stamped cafe? coupon. It's not only a few pieces of cou- pons or ink stamp that made her bag heavier. There are thrilling happiness that she found a new restaurant and palpitating plans for her next visit there. The movie tickets used today(she will probably throw them away a few days later anyway) hold onto the me- mories of today that she wouldn't want to throw away.

The weight of ink stamped on the coupon is engraved simultaneously with the thrill that she can have a free cup of coffee next time and her boyfriend's nagging: "Why do you save on those trivial things and still go shopping?" Just like that, the possessions in her hand bag identify with the woman, provoke her brain and excrete hormones in her body. Until the final moment they part away, she will take in his fragrance with her olfactory sense and become reminiscent of the conver- sations she had with him today. Man and woman take in things in their respective bags in their own way: Man takes in reality. Woman takes in romance.



안민정 작가는 보이지 않는 것의 생명력과 존재감을 과학과 수학이라는 가장 설득력 있는 증명 방식을 차용하여 작품으로 드러낸다. 수학과 순수예술을 접목하는 신선한 기법을 이용하여 새로운 예술 형태를 제시하는 활발한 젊은 작가이다.


<가방해부도(Anatomical Chart of Bag)>, 2014 일상의 이야기를 ‘수학 공식화’하는 작업은 언제, 어떤 계기로 시작하셨나요?
8년 전쯤 학교에서 문득 ‘나를 자로 재듯 도면에 그려 나가면 어떨까?’ 하는 발상에서 수학이나 과학, 건축 도면에 쓰이는 기호를 찾아 자화상을 그려 보았어요. 그러다 겉모습만이 아닌 눈에 보이지 않는 것들도 도식화된 기호를 통해 표현해 보았고, 그것이 계기가 되어 일상 속 이야기를 기호를 통해 공식화하는 작업을 시작했습니다.


작가님 작품은 아주 개인적인 소재를 다루지만, 관람자가 쉽게 공감할 만한 요소를 많이 가지고 있는 것 같습니다. 일상 속에서 어떻게 작품 소재를 고르시나요?
제 작품이 다른 사람에게는 소소하고 평범해 보이지만 저에게는 특별하고 소중한 것들이에요. 그래서 제가 관심을 가지고 있고 개인적으로 소중하거나 특별하다고 생각하는 것들이 작품에 자연스럽게 드러나는 것 같아요. 특히 ‘가족’이나 ‘연인’과의 추억을 많이 다루시는데, 대중이 흔히 생각하는 ‘사회에서 고립된 고독한 아티스트’ 이미지가 아닌, ‘가족 중심적’, ’관계 지향적’인 성격이 독특하게 다가옵니다. 어떻게 생각하세요? 어떤 아티스트든 마찬가지겠지만 자신이 좋아하거나 관심이 가는 것이 곧 작업으로 이어지는데 저는 제 주변에서 일어나는 일, 자주 보는 사람들과의 관계에서 흥미와 재미를 느껴요. 그러다 보니 작품도 제 주변에서 일어나는 일들로 만들어지는 것 같아요. 과학을 만난 안민정 작가의 가방 이미지는 어떻게 만들어졌나요? 이번 가방방정식 전시를 준비하면서 가방이 사람과 비슷한 요소를 많이 가지고 있다는 걸 생각하게 되었어요. 전시 작품 중 <가방해부도>는 이번 전시의 출발점이라고 볼 수 있어요. 가방의 기능에 인간의 몸과 비슷한 점이 많다는 점에서 서로를 해부해 오버랩한 것입니다.예를 들어, 사람과 가방을 이어 주는 가방끈은 사람과 사람을 이어 주는 팔과 같고, 가방의 입구(지퍼)는 사람의 입(치아)과 닮았어요. 또 이동의 편리를 위한 부품인 캐리어의 바퀴는 사람의 다리와 같은 기능을 해요. 나아가 가방 속에 물건을 담는 것은 마치 마음속에 생각과 감정을 담은 인간의 모습과 비슷하다는 생각을 했어요. 그래서 가방의 이미지와 사람의 이미지를 매칭하면서 작업을 진행해 나갔어요. 가방이라는 소재를 다룬 작품을 통해 <Bag is Science: 가방방정식>에서 전하고자 하는 말은 무엇인지요? ‘가방=사람’이지요. 수학에서 등호는 ‘같다’라는 뜻이잖아요. 단순하지만 가방은 그 사람의 이야기와 추억을 ‘담은’, 혹은 그 사람의 성향과 스타일을 ‘닮은’ 매우 개인적인 물건이라고 생각해요. 가방은 물건을 넣어 들고 다니는 도구 그 이상의 것이라는 말이죠. 결국 사람이 가방이 되고 가방이 사람이 되는 것처럼 말이죠.


가방에 얽힌 추억을 어떻게 공식화하시나요?
‘추억’이라는 것은 눈에 보이지도 않고 측량할 수도 없어요. 이번 전시작 중 <서로를 담다>는 데이트 후의 가방 무게로 가방에 담긴 남녀의 이야기를 표현했어요. 남자의 가방에는 여자친구가 챙겨 준 호두파이와 당장 내일 아침에 먹을 식빵, 그리고 남자 혼자서는 고르기 힘든 남성용 폼클렌징이 들어있는데 여기서 물체의 무게만이 아니라 ‘든든함’과 ‘안정감’이라는 보이지 않는 무게가 늘어난 것을 볼 수 있어요. 또한 원래 들어 있던 전공서와 투자입문서에는 미래에 대한 ‘책임감’과 함께 여자친구에 대한 ‘사랑’과 ‘헌신’이 들어 있어요. 여자의 가방은 오늘 본 영화표 두 장과 맛집 쿠폰, 단골집 커피 도장 잉크로 인해 데이트 후 가방의 무게가 아주 미세하게 늘어났는데 거기엔 수많은 이야기와 감정들이 담겨 있어요. 예를 들어 남자친구가 그녀를 위해 준비한 깜짝 영화표는 며칠 후면 버릴 것이지만 남자친구의 애정이 들어 있기에 가방에 넣어 둔 것이고, 단골집 커피 쿠폰의 도장 잉크에는 다음번에 마실 무료 커피에 대한 ‘기대감’과 함께 귀찮게 그런 것을 왜 모으느냐, 차라리 쇼핑을 줄이겠다는 남자친구의 잔소리도 들어 있어요. 또한 새로 발견한 맛집 쿠폰은 다음 데이트에 대한 ‘계획’과 ‘설렘’이 들어 있지요. 가방에 담긴 이야기를 공식화한다는 것은 이렇게 단순히 가방 속 물건만이 아니라 함께 담긴 이야기들이 또 하나의 단서가 되어 새로운 공식을 만들어 낸다는 것을 표현한 것입니다.


작가님의 가방에는 무엇을 담고 싶나요?
제 가방에는 필요한 물건만 담겨 있으면 좋겠어요. 무거운 걸 싫어하는데, 특히 비가 오지 않는 날 가방에서 우산을 발견하면 짜증이 나곤 해요. 그런데 꼭 그렇지만은 않은 게 전에 바닷가에 놀러 가서 이게 다 추억이라며 조개껍데기를 주워 가방에 담아 온 적이 있어요. 짐이 될 걸 알면서도 가방에 담아 왔는데 이럴 때 보면 가볍고 실용적인 것만 챙기는 것 같진 않아요. 그래서 제 가방에는 꼭 필요한 물건과 함께 그날의 아름다운 추억이 될 만한 물건들이 담겨 있으면 좋겠어요. 가방에 얽힌 개인적인 에피소드가 있다면 들려주실 수 있나요? 아주 오래전 대학 입시를 준비하던 시절에 그림이 들어 있는 가방을 들고 지하철을 탔다가 선반에 두고 내린 적이 있어요. 결국 못 찾았는데 그 후로는 가방을 지하철 선반에 두지 않아요. 꼭 선반에 두어야 할 경우가 있었는데 또 잃어버릴까 봐 고민하다가 마침 가방 안에 있는 실로 가방에 묶고 그 실을 제 손목에 칭칭 감았어요.


안민정 작가에게 가방이란?
이번 전시를 준비하면서 가방에 생각보다 더 많은 의미가 있다는 걸 알았어요. 신체의 일부처럼 늘 나와 가까운 곳에 있고 그동안 ‘나’를 담아 온 필요하고 중요한 존재(?)라는 생각을 했죠.


앞으로의 활동 계획이 궁금합니다.
4월 말부터 1년간 레지던시 프로그램에 참여하게 되었는데 거기서도 저는 일상의 소소한 이야기들을 소재로 다양한 작업을 할 예정입니다. 바람이 있다면 제 작품을 통해 누구나 누릴 수 있고 상대적이지 않은 개인의 이야기들을 소중하고 특별하게 간직하는 사람들이 많아졌으면 하는 것입니다.

가방 관련 전시라고 들었는데 가방이 보이지 않는다. 가방은 진열장도, 캔버스도 아닌 다른 곳에, 익히 봐왔던 모습이 아닌 다른 모습으로 존재하고 있었다. 백정기 작가는 네 개의 수조 안에 가방을 집어넣었다. 수조 밑에 자리한 복잡한 형태의 기계 끝에 달린 얇은 호스의 최종 종착지는 꽃다발. 가방의 천연 가죽에서 추출한 방부제와 색소가 하얀 꽃을 울긋불긋하게 물들이고 있었다. 본래의 색을 잃어버린 꽃잎은 방부제로 인해 일정 기간 동안, 적어도 전시가 끝나는 6월 말까지는 썩지도, 시들지도 않을 거란다. ‘인간의 꽃’이라 붙여진 이 작품을 통해 작가는 자연에 대한 인간의 욕망을 이야기한다. 자연의 불가항력에 대항하는 인간의 욕망은 때때로 지나침을 낳고, 자연의 숭고함을 잊게 한다. 작품은 너무도 당연시 되고 있는 자연에 대한 인간의 욕망을 시각화함으로써 자연에 저항하는 우리 역시 자연의 일부임을 다시금 곱씹게 만든다.

안민정 작가의 작품은 ‘피식’ 웃음을 터트리게 만드는 기분 좋은 능력을 띠고 있었다. 그녀는 일상의 이야기를 기호화, 공식화하는 작업을 주로 해왔는데, 이번에도 역시 가방과 사람의 관계를 그녀만의 해석법으로 위트 있게 풀어냈다. ‘가방사용법’은 가방을 의인화한 작품. 사람과 사람이 어떤 형태로 몸을 접촉하느냐에 따라 각기 다른 가방의 이름이 붙여진다. 예를 들어, 백 허그의 형태는 힙색이 되고, 어부바는 백팩, 팔짱은 토트백, 손잡기는 클러치백이 되는 식이다. ‘서로를 담다’는 내일을 기약하며 아쉬운 헤어짐을 나눈 연인의 가방의 무게를 공식화해낸다. 데이트 전 비어 있던 남자의 가방은 여자친구가 챙겨준 호두파이와 폼클렌저로 인해 물리적 무게뿐만 아니라 든든함과 안정감이라는 감정적 무게까지 늘어난다. 여기에 기존에 들어 있던 전공서와 투자 입문서는 미래에 대한 책임감이라는 체감 무게가 실려 더 무거워진다. 여자의 작은 핸드백은 오늘의 추억이 담겨있는 영화 티켓 두 장과 조만간 공짜 커피를 먹을 수 있다는 기쁨을 안겨주는 커피숍 쿠폰 도장으로 인해 미세한 무게 변화를 일으킨다. 안민정 작가가 구현한 데이트의 추억은 과학 공식처럼 복잡해 보이지만 하나하나 뜯어보면 고개가 절로 끄덕여진다. 이렇듯 그녀의 작품들은 재미와 공감을 자아내면서 동시에 하나의 창조적인 작품으로서 감탄을 불러일으켰다. 참고로 이번 전시는 핸드백 브랜드 ‘시몬느 0914’가 진행하는 장기 전시 프로젝트 ‘Bagstage展 by 0914’의 세 번째 전시로 가방과 과학의 결합을 통해 가방을 재해석하고, 가방의 의미를 확장하고자 마련됐다. 전시는 6월 29일까지 가로수길에 위치한 갤러리0914에서 계속된다.
