Minjeong An Becomes the Youngest Korean Artist to Join the Permanent Collection of New York’s MoMA

Korean artist Minjeong An (b. 1981) has been added to the permanent collection of The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York with her work Self-Portrait_Rachaph (2024). Among Korean artists represented in MoMA’s permanent collection, An is the youngest.

The work explores the physical and emotional changes the artist experienced following childbirth, translating these experiences into a diagrammatic visual language. It was first presented in the 2024 exhibition Exoskeleton at P21 in Seoul. The work was subsequently featured in MoMA’s collection exhibition Body Constructs, leading to its acquisition by the museum. It is currently on view in MoMA’s permanent collection galleries in New York.


An transforms seemingly insignificant personal memories and experiences into a distinctive visual language inspired by anatomical diagrams. Through this approach, she examines the value and significance of seemingly ordinary events in an individual’s life, viewing personal experiences through the lens of objective measurement and numerical systems.

The scientific and analytical imagery in her work mimics the methods of scientific inquiry, translating the external effects that environments and lived experiences have on the body into detailed diagrams. Her works function as visual records that map the complex relationship between the body, memory, emotion, and external conditions.

An received both her BFA and MFA in Fine Art from Seoul National University of Science and Technology. Her solo exhibitions include Staniar Gallery, Washington and Lee University, Lexington (2025); The Gallery D., Hongcheon (2018); Opsis Art Gallery, Seoul (2015); and the War Memorial of Korea, Seoul (2013).


She has also participated in numerous group exhibitions and biennials, including the 13th Seoul Mediacity Biennale, Seoul (2025); The Museum of Modern Art, New York (2025); P21, Seoul (2024); and the 14th Shanghai Biennale, Shanghai (2023).

안민정 작가, 한국 작가 중 최연소로 뉴욕 MoMA 영구 소장 리스트에 오르다

한국의 80년대생 작가 안민정(b. 1981)의 작품 〈자화상_라하프〉(2024)가 뉴욕 현대미술관(MoMA)에 영구 소장되었다. MoMA의 영구 소장 리스트에 포함된 역대 한국 작가들 가운데, 안민정은 최연소 작가이다.

해당 작품은 작가가 출산 이후의 신체적, 정서적 변화를 도면적 언어로 풀어낸 작업으로, 2024년 P21의 기획전 《Exoskeleton》에서 처음 공개되었다. 이후 MoMA 컬렉션 전시 《Body Constructs》에 소개되며 영구 소장으로 이어지게 되었다. 현재 작품은 뉴욕 MoMA 상설 전시 공간에서 만나볼 수 있다.

안민정은 사소해 보이는 개인의 추억과 기억을 자신만의 조형 언어인 해부학 도면 양식으로 불러와 개인에게 유의미할 수 있는 사소한 일들의 가치 및 경험을 객관적인 수치로 바라본다. 작품에서 볼 수 있는 과학적 탐구를 모방한 묘사는 작가의 경험과 함께 외부 환경이 작가의 몸에 미친 많은 외부 효과들을 상세하게 묘사하는 다이어그램으로 포착할 수 있다.


작가는 국립서울과학기술대학교에서 조형예술학과 학사 및 석사 학위를 취득하였다. Staniar Gallery, 워싱턴앤리대학교, 렉싱턴(2025); 더 갤러리 D., 홍천 (2018); 옵시스 아트 갤러리, 서울 (2015); 그리고 전쟁기념관, 서울 (2013) 등에서 개인전을 개최하였으며, 제13회 서울미디어시티비엔날레, 서울(2025); 뉴욕현대미술관, 뉴욕(2025); P21, 서울(2024); 제14회 상하이 비엔날레, 상하이 (2023) 등에서 열린 다수의 그룹전 및 비엔날레에 참여하였다.
